OVERVIEW: A Music Publishing Company
A music publishing company handles four different areas:
1. Performing Arts Rights -Royalties paid for radio/internet play and for live performances of the Work by someone other than the Artist or owner of the Works (i.e., ASCAP and BMI).
2. Mechanical Rights – Royalties paid to the owner of the Works when another artist records one of the Works (i.e., Harry Fox Associates).
3. Synchronization – Licensing Fees paid to the owner of the Works for use in television, motion pictures or commercials.
4. Sheet Music – Royalties paid to the owner of the Works for the sales of sheet music (paper or digital). The music publishing company is generally responsible for marketing the Works to record labels, other artists, advertising agencies and production companies on behalf of the artist. Music publishing companies and artists enter into a contract where the artist agrees to transfer all rights of a Work to the music publishing company for a specific period of time. The standard terms are 50% to the artist and 50% to the publishing company.
